Documents you need to sell a car in Kenya

4 min read · Updated October 2026

To sell a car in Kenya you need the original logbook, your ID and KRA PIN, and a written sale agreement. Buyer and seller then complete the transfer through NTSA’s online service. Keep a copy of everything.

What to prepare

  • The original logbook in your name.
  • Your national ID or passport, and KRA PIN.
  • A written sale agreement signed by both sides.
  • Service records and any spare keys.
  • Proof that any loan on the car has been cleared.

If a loan is on the logbook

Clear the loan and ask the lender to release its interest before you transfer the car. Buyers should not pay in full until the logbook can actually move to their name.

Protect yourself as the seller

  • Confirm that the payment has cleared before you hand over the car.
  • Record the date, time and mileage at handover in the sale agreement.
  • Complete the transfer quickly, so later fines are not linked to you.
  • Cancel your insurance only after ownership has changed.

Common questions

Can I sell a car without the logbook?
You should get a replacement logbook from NTSA first. Buyers should be very cautious about any sale without one.
Who pays the transfer fee?
Buyer and seller can agree this, though the buyer often pays. Put the agreement in writing and confirm the current fee on the NTSA portal.
