Used car test drive checklist

5 min read · Updated October 2026

Test a used car from a cold start, drive for at least 20 minutes on smooth and rough roads, and try the brakes, steering and gearbox. Then check for leaks and warning lights after the drive.

Before you start

  • Ask the seller not to warm the car up, and feel the bonnet when you arrive.
  • Check that you are insured or that the seller’s policy covers you.
  • Bring a mechanic or a friend who knows cars.
  • Check that every warning light comes on, then goes off after starting.

On the road

  • Listen for knocks from the suspension on a rough section.
  • Brake firmly on an empty road. The car should stay straight.
  • Let go of the wheel briefly on a straight road to feel whether it pulls.
  • Change through all the gears, or check that an automatic shifts smoothly.
  • Try the air conditioning, windows and every other control.

After the drive

  • Look under the car for fresh leaks.
  • Check the exhaust for heavy smoke.
  • Open the bonnet and listen to the engine at idle.
  • Ask a mechanic to scan the car for stored fault codes.

Common questions

How long should a test drive be?
Aim for at least 20 minutes, covering traffic, a faster road and a rough surface if possible.
Should I test drive a car alone?
No. Meet in a safe public place, tell someone where you are going, and take someone with you.
